Rocca Calascio

The fortress Rocca Calascio is located at an altitude of 1460 meters and can call itself the highest fortress in the Apennines. In the 10th century a watchtower was built here and expanded in the 13th century. In 1461 the castle was damaged by an earthquake and has not been rebuilt since.

Today you can walk through the romantic ruins on the hilltop. Scenes for the films Ladyhawke, The Name of the Rose and The American were filmed here. Near the fortress you will find the octagonal church of Santa Maria della Pietà, built in 1596 on the spot where, according to legend, the locals settled a score with a gang of robbers
