Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere
The Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere is a basilica and monastery complex on top of a hill overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Both the basilica and the monastery were built in the 13th century on the site of an older monastery.
The original monastery was a rectangular structure with four levels and a raised gateway that was renovated in the Renaissance period. Abbot Oderisius II had the monastery built in the 13th century, but the current monastery is largely a 20th-century restoration. The basilica is built in typical Cistercian style. The apses inside are decorated with 13th-century frescoes.
