Sulmona

Sulmona is located in the Valle Peligna, a plateau where there was once a lake, but which has disappeared since prehistoric times. In ancient times, Sulmona was one of the most important cities of the Paeligni tribe, but Sulmona is best known as the birthplace of the acclaimed Roman poet Ovid.

Some highlights during your visit to Sulmona

One of the main attractions here is the cathedral, on the northwest side of the old town. It was built on the site of a Roman temple and contains a crypt where the original Romanesque style of the church is still visible, despite 18th-century renovations.

In one of the main squares, Piazza XX Settembre, there is a bronze statue of Ovid.

The largest square is Piazza Garibaldi, with a large baroque fountain in the middle. Festivals and events take place here every summer.

Don't miss Palazzo Annunziata, a rare example of a Renaissance building that survived the 1706 earthquake. It now houses a museum that chronicles the city's Roman history.

Outside the gates of the modern city you can still see the remains of an amphitheatre, theatre and thermal baths.
