Saint Stephen of Sessanio

Saint Stephen of Sessanio

Saint Stephen of Sessanio

The medieval hill town of Santo Stefano di Sessanio borders the high plain of the Campo Imperatore. The village was largely abandoned for decades and its historic buildings fell into ruin. Until a few years ago, only 70 people called Santo Stefano di Sessanio home. Today, much of the village has been restored and it will come as no surprise that the effort has been rewarded with the official title of one of Italy's most beautiful villages.

Santo Stefano di Sessanio is also renowned for its sustainable agriculture, particularly its gourmet lentils, or lenticchie. The town even holds a lentil festival, the Sagra delle Lenticchie, every year on the first weekend of September.
