Guardiagrele

Guardiagrele

Nestled in the foothills of the Majella mountain at an altitude of around 576 metres, Guardiagrele is another of the most beautiful villages in Italy, and is also a great base for exploring the Majella National Park. The village boasts the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, surrounded by other churches and townhouses from various centuries, all of architectural and historical interest. The oldest church is San Nicola di Bari, believed to have been founded in the 4th century.

There are also several museums here that you can visit if you have the time: a civic museum, an archaeological museum, a cathedral museum and a costume and folk museum. Guardiagrele is known throughout Abruzzo for its wrought iron, copper and gold work. It was also the home of the great goldsmith and sculptor Nicola da Guardiagrele, who was born here at the end of the 14th century.
