Scanno

Scanno

Scanno

Scanno is not only known for its ricotta, pecorino and gregoriano, but also for its traditional women's clothing dating back to the 17th century. Edward Lear said that the most beautiful women in Italy lived in Scanno.

In the historic centre of Scanno you will notice a surprising number of churches. San Rocco, San Eustacio and San Giovanni Battista, for example, and also the remarkable Santa Maria della Valle, with astonishing medieval frescoes and an impressive altar.

Nearby is Lake Scanno, Abruzzo's largest natural water reservoir

According to local legend, the lake was formed by a feud between a white witch and a sorcerer, and marks the spot where the witch eventually fell. Scanno is becoming increasingly popular with tourists, and in the summer it can get quite busy around the lake. However, this traditional Italian hill town is still a lovely place to stop before continuing your journey.
