Lanciano
Lanciano is known for the first recorded Catholic Eucharistic miracle
According to tradition, an 8th century monk who doubted the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist discovered that when he said the words of consecration during the service, the bread and wine changed into flesh and blood. The Catholic Church officially claims the miracle as authentic.
Visit the many churches in Lanciano
In Lanciano you can see the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Ponte, which houses a Byzantine statue of the Madonna from the 8th century. There is also Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the most prominent buildings in the city. That church was built in the 12th century and finished in 1540 in Baroque style. There are also a number of other churches such as San Francesco, Sant'Agostino, and the oldest church in the city, and San Biagio, which dates back to the 11th century.
Other sights include the 19th-century bell tower next to the cathedral, the Torri Montanare, part of the 11th-century walls. Climb the tower for a beautiful view of the area. There is also another tower, the Torre Aragonese from the 15th century. You can also visit the diocesan museum, housed in a 16th-century palace, and a medieval house from 1434, which now houses antique shops on the ground floor.
