The Salinello Gorges Reserve protects the natural habitat created over millions of years by the Salinello River. The reserve extends between Civatella del Tronto and Valle Castellana. The river has carved out a deep canyon that today attracts hikers and nature lovers. The canyon is crisscrossed by streams, waterfalls, lakes and springs, and remarkable karst caves have also formed over the millennia.

In this beautiful area hermits have retreated. We must also mention the Hermitage of San Angelo in Volturino, one of the most important monasteries of Salinello. In this large "cave monastery" you can still see the traces of frescoes, floors and painted plasterwork. The cave of Sant'Angelo is also of exceptional beauty.
