L'Aquila

L'Aquila is the capital of Abruzzo

L'Aquila, a pleasant city protected by medieval walls, stands on a hilltop in the valley of the Aterno River. It is a charming and lively university town that you should definitely spend some time exploring. However, L'Aquila is still rarely visited by international tourists and is somewhat off the tourist track.

What to see and do during your visit to L'Aquila?

At the highest point of L'Aquila you can visit the large Spanish fortress, which now houses the National Museum of Abruzzo.

Another major attraction is the cathedral dedicated to Saint Maximus of Aveia (San Massimo).

There are a number of other notable religious buildings including the Basilica of San Bernardino, Santa Maria di Collemaggio, Santa Giusta and San Silvestro.

Throughout the city you will see historical fountains popping up like mushrooms. The most famous is the Fountain of the 99 Spouts.
