Pescara
Pescara, the most populous city in Abruzzo, is located on the Adriatic coast at the mouth of the Aterno-Pescara river. The historic city centre is situated on the southern bank of the river, where the Piazzaforte (fortified town) once stood, a military stronghold of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. You can see the Bagno Borbonico (the ancient prison of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, within the original Norman and Byzantine walls).
Today it houses the Museum of Abruzzo. In 13 rooms dedicated to the daily life, traditions and economy of Abruzzo, the 4000-year history of this region is examined. In the historic centre you will also find the 20th-century Cathedral of San Cetteo.
In addition to exploring the historic part of Pescara, you might also want to visit the north side of the river, where grand government buildings and an old courthouse now house a museum stand. The district of elegant Art Nouveau villas in the far south of the city, between a nature reserve and the beach, is a nice change of pace.
