Pacentro

Pacentro

Pacentro is nestled in the Apennines, nestled among a cluster of small hills, some 650 metres above sea level. The castle stands proudly on a hill (Colle Castello) on one side of the town, and on the other hill (Colle San Marco) stands the ancient church of San Marco. The town lies below Mount Morrone and above the Peligna Valley (Conca Peligna).

Pacentro has been a famous mountain refuge since Roman times and has a documented history dating back to the 8th century. The castle of Pacentro was part of a fortified line along the strategic San Leonardo mountain pass to Pescara. The castle in its current state dates back to the 10th century. It is partly in ruins, but three of the four towers are still largely intact. The oldest part of the town is the area around the castle. Fun fact: Popular American singer Madonna's paternal grandparents were from Pacentro.
