Which wines come from Abruzzo, Italy? Good wineries

Abruzzo, and in particular the province of Pescara, is known for some excellent wines. The main wines from this region are:

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo - is the most famous red wine from the Abruzzo region and is made from the Montepulciano grape. This is a powerful, fruity wine with notes of cherries, plums, spices and sometimes a light woody note when matured in oak barrels.

Trebbiano d'Abruzzo - one of the most important white wines from the Abruzzo region. This is a fresh, lively wine that goes well with fish dishes and light meals.

Vermentino - is an aromatic white grape grown primarily in coastal areas of Italy, such as Sardinia, Liguria, and Tuscany. In Abruzzo, Vermentino is less common than Trebbiano or Pecorino, but some producers in the region are experimenting with it.

Fiano - is a premium white grape variety best known for Fiano di Avellino DOCG from Campania. This grape is less commonly grown in Abruzzo, but some wineries are experimenting with it due to the growing popularity of indigenous Italian white wines.

Falanghina - an aromatic and fresh white wine that comes mainly from Campania. In Abruzzo Falanghina is less common, but some wineries experiment with it.

Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo – A rosé wine made from Montepulciano grapes, which has a deeper color and fuller flavor than most rosés.

Pecorino – An increasingly popular white wine with a rich flavour and aromas of tropical fruit, herbs and mineral notes.

Passerina – A fresh, aromatic white wine that often has light floral and fruity notes.

Many of these wines are produced in the hilly areas around Pescara, where the climate is ideal for growing vines. Well-known wineries in the region include Masciarelli, Tiberio and Valentini, which produce high-quality wines.

In the Abruzzo region, especially in the province of Pescara, there are several wineries worth discovering.

Countess Agricultural Farm
Anyone familiar with the name Contesa would be well aware that it is a winery unlike any other. A living testament born out of the unbreakable bond between our family and our grapevines, it is a connection fortified by the bountiful lands that our vineyards call home. The story of our winery is one forged in a stalwart refusal to compromise our values; which has, often times, brought us to make difficult decisions toward protecting and advancing the interests of our estate. Many men and women from generations before us have devoted their lives to this family enterprise to ensure its continuity and its resilience, and the success of our thriving winery today bears testament to the integrity, conviction, and pride our ancestors had of their own roots – in a land that has long known them.
